His father Naval Tata and his mother Sonoo got separated when he was only 10 years old. He was moved to an orphanage and later adopted by Navajbai Tata, wife of Sir Ratanji Jamsetji Tata.

He was both an engineer and a business student. Ratan Tata moved to New York in 1955 where he did graduation in Architecture and Structural Engineering. After 20 years, he joined Harvard Business School and completed a management course.
