Hyundai Motor Group Aims For Space Exploration,Starts Building Advanced Lunar rover

As part of a joint multilateral research agreement that Hyundai Motor Group had signed with six Korean research institutes in the aerospace sector, the manufacturer is building a development model of a lunar exploration rover. The autonomous unit is being designed specifically to explore the lunar surface.

Institutes Joining The Project

  • As part of the multi-purpose mobility platform, the rover will make use of advanced robotics and autonomous driving technologies (camera, LiADR), driving system (motor, wheels, suspension), charging parts (solar panel, battery), and Hyundai Rotem’s robot manufacturing technology.
  • Hyundai Motor Group devised the initial direction for the lunar exploration mobility development model after consulting with stakeholders.
  • By the second half of next year, it anticipates that the initial test units will be completed. Then, the objective is to foster a model with send-off capacity in 2027.

The Group will combine the robotics, autonomous driving, charging components, and driving systems of the Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation. In addition, the technology will be provided by Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary that manufactures rolling stock, military equipment, and plant engineering.

In the lower segment, you’ll find the Gathering’s parts, which will act as a versatility stage. To deal with the harsh environments of the lunar surface, the machine will be designed to withstand extreme temperatures and incorporate radiation shielding.

In order to carry out extensive testing on the rover and make any necessary adjustments, Hyundai Motor Group will create a setting that is comparable to the surface of the moon. The objective is to land the rover close to the south pole of the moon, where it will carry out scientific missions, provided that everything goes according to plan. We are hoping to see some video of the lunar rover operating.

Hyundai Motor Group is expected to complete the initial test unit as soon as the second half of 2024 and by 2027, it aims to create a model that has launch capability by 2027.
