The crash of an IAF Helicopter ‘Mi-17V5’ yesterday has raised endless questions over its reliability and functionality. The aircraft is known to be the most robust, safest, and has no history of system malfunction. Its past performance on the battlefield indicates that the helicopter is reliable and faultless.

So, what made it crash on the day when General Bipin Rawat was traveling along with his wife and senior officials of the Army?

Only Group Captain Varun Singh survived the deadliest crash that happened yesterday on 8th December 2021. The causes are yet unknown and therefore a detailed investigation has been initiated by the IAF immediately.

Amitabh Ranjan, who is a former pilot of Mi-17V5, has told India Today what would have gone wrong that day.

What Happened That Day?

General Bipin Rawat was flying to the Defence Services Staff College where he was about to address the students and faculty. He took a flight from Delhi and then boarded Mi-17V5 from Salur at 11:50 am which was scheduled to land at the destination within an hour.

Before he could reach the college, the aircraft hit the trees at Coonoor and landed in the form of a burning vessel on the ground.

Reasons For IAF Helicopter Crash

  1. Locals who saw the accident said the weather was bad on that day and the sky was covered with fog. Even Ranjan has pointed towards the unclear weather of that area.
  2. The second reason behind IAF helicopter crash could be a mechanical failure as only expert pilots are allowed to fly Mi-17V5. They are well trained for it so only possibility left is that something might have caused the malfunctioning of aircraft.
  3. The height at which the helicopter crashed is also a subject of investigation.
  4. Lastly, the presence of power lines may have prevented the aircraft from escaping.

All these possible reasons given by Ranjan may be true but the reality will be unfolded after the investigation gets completed. A black box is found at the crash site which will disclose everything, from the condition of aircraft and conversations occurred that day. It is the only hope and soul of the investigation.
