Guru Purnima

Quoting the words of Swami Vivekananda, ‘’ A guru is not someone who holds a torch for you.’’ He is the torch.
Let’s take a moment and honour those who illuminate our paths.

When is Guru Purnima in 2025?

The most revered Guru Purnima will be celebrated on 10th July 2025, Thursday. A day to honour, express gratitude, and seek blessings from our guru, teachers, and mentors who guide us through the course of life.
Blessings are very important in our lives, and Guru Purnima is an auspicious occasion to seek the bountiful blessings of our Gurus.

What is Guru Purnima?

guru purnimaA Day to honour the Guru is also known as Vyas Purnima, which is celebrated on the Full Moon Day (Purnima) of the Ashada month (June- July).
It marks the birth of Maharishi Ved Vyas, known as Adi Guru, who holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism and is the author of the Mahabharata and composer of the Puranas. He is regarded as the first Guru in human history and is also one of the seven Chiranjivis (Immortals who are believed to exist still to guide humanity).

Guru Purnima is dedicated to paying tribute to our Gurus. But it isn’t just about celebrating the Great Saints and Sages but honoring all those who lead by example.
Devotees offer fast, do selfless service and often ashrams to offer flowers, sweets and perform paduka pooja.

Who is a Guru?

guru PurnimaThe word ‘Guru’ has its roots in Sanskrit
Breaking it down, ‘Gu’ meaning darkness or lack of enlightenment
‘Ru’ meaning Remover

Hence, a Guru is someone who removes darkness from our lives, not just around us but within us and gives us a clear direction when we stumble onto the path of ignorance.
Guru is the dispeller of darkness and the torchbearer for enlightenment.

This Guru Purnima don’t just light a lamp but be the light in someone’s life. That’s like a real Guru for you!

The Glory of the Guru in your life

Guru PurnimaIn a world full of chaos, stress, and ignorance, wisdom is all we are seeking! To enlighten us with real knowledge, we need a Guru. The holy Bhagavad-Gita emphasizes that the role of a Guru in our lives is to guide us towards self-realization. Bhagwat Gita emphasizes that a true guru has seen the truth (tattva darshinah) and can impart this knowledge to others.

The presence of the Guru in one’s life is rare and a divine blessing.
According to the Vedas, without the grace of a true Guru, one is lost in the web of ego, doubt and Maya. In Hinduism, A guru is regarded as more respected and distinguished than God himself.

The necessity of a guru is described in this verse of the Bhagwat Gita.
‘’ tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā | upadekṣyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ ||

Translation: “Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. This shloka highlights the role of a guru in imparting knowledge and emphasizes rendering respectful and selfless service to the teacher.

The Guru Tattva: Insights from our Scriptures

Our spiritual texts glorify the sacred guru-disciple relationship and the necessity of a guru in one’s life.

The holy Bhagwat Gita extols the indispensable role of a guru in the spiritual journey:

कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभाव:
पृच्छामि त्वां धर्मसम्मूढचेता: |
यच्छ्रेय: स्यान्निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्मे
शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम् || ||

The beauty of the word ‘’ surrender is perfectly explained in these lines from the Gita: whenever we are confused or besieged, we surrender unto our guru to find our purpose. Guru knows what’s best for you and will decisively tell you the righteous path.

The Srima Bhagavatam illuminates the role of Sri Guru as one with Krishna.

ācāryaṁ māṁ vijānīyān nāvamanyeta karhicit
na martya-buddhyāsūyeta sarva-deva-mayo guruḥ
Srimad Bhagavatam

Bhagavan Sri Krishna said, you should know the Acarya, Sri Gurudeva, to be My very self and don’t ever consider him as an ordinary man. Never disrespect him in any way and always treat him with respect, as my manifestation.

According to the Vayu Purana, an Acarya is defined as one who knows all the Vedic literature and abides by its rules and regulations.
An Acarya- the spiritual master is the manifestation of lord Shri Krishna. A disciple should always respect him like it’s Shri Krishna.

In Guru Gita, Skanda Purana,
The mantra “Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Shakshat Param Brahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha” is mentioned.
This golden mantra translates to The Guru is Brahma (the creator), the Guru is Vishnu (the sustainer), the Guru is Shiva (the destroyer), and the Guru is the very embodiment of the Supreme Brahman. I defer to that Guru. It is a famous Hindu prayer; we all have heard it a zillion times.
