As the duration of pregnancy increases, the baby bump grows big. Sleeping on the back would seem the most comfortable sleeping position but that is not it. Experts say pregnant women should avoid sleeping straight as this can cause several health issues like

  • Digestive problems
  • Low blood circulation to the heart
  • Hemorrhoids

It happens due to the big belly that rests on the major blood vessels which restrict proper blood flow.

Women who have a habit of sleeping on their tummy would have to leave their comfort zone as this is again an incorrect position. However, you can use a pillow that has a big hole to support the belly while sleeping.

Researchers are concerned about sleeping positions a lot due to the cases of stillbirths in pregnant women. Stillbirth happens when the fetus dies just before the labor or during the 20 weeks of pregnancy.

However, there is very little confirmation that incorrect sleeping position causes stillbirths. Nevertheless, it is better to be on the safer side that is SOS. Left or right? Does the choice of side also matter?

Ideally left is the right side. This is because of a vein that directly carries blood to the heart from the spine. Another reason is the little or no pressure that your body experiences in this position. Good for those who have swelling issues.

Contrary to this, sleeping on the right is not completely safe or unsafe. You can switch between the positions but try to stick with the left side because of the above reasons. This can cause discomfort for those who are not used to it, therefore practice from the first trimester itself.
