Taliban Imposes Restriction On Women, Not Allowed To Go Restaurants

On April 10th, 2023, the Taliban restricted the entry of families and women into restaurants having gardens or green spaces in the Herat region of Afghanistan

The judgment is passed after religious divines complaints of mixing genders in any place like that. An executive from Afgan said that the restriction has been imposed because of gender mixing or because women reportedly not wearing any hijab

Also, the restriction is only for restaurants having green spaces in the Herat region only. The restaurant restriction is only applicable to set-ups in Herat, where premises like this will carry on to welcome men

A deputy official of the Ministry of Vice and Virtue’s directorate in Herat, Baz Mohammad Nazir refused the reports of media that all dining was restricted to families and women, referring to them as propaganda. 

He clarified that it will only be applicable to restaurants having green areas like parks, where men and women can come together. “After constant complaints from scholars and normal people, we set restrictions and closed these restaurants.”

The head of the Vice and Virtue directorate of Herat, Azizurrahman Al Muhajir revealed that “It was similar to a park but they referred to it as a restaurant and men and women were together

Thanks to God that it has been amended now. Also, the auditors are keeping an eye over the parks where men and women usually go.”

The Bunch Of Limitations

It was the newest in the bunch of limitations forced by the Taliban after taking power in August 2021. They have also restricted the girls to go to schools and universities after sixth class. 

Not only this, but women are also restricted from most types of employment and jobs at the UN, public places, and gyms. 

At the same time, the European Union (EU) helped the women of the Taliban with the elimination of the ban on Afgan working women. 

The European Union said that the restriction on working women for the UN organization breaches international law and that help to Afghanistan cannot be given nonetheless of gender, help activities will be considered again.

The UN revealed that there are 3,300 male as well as female staff of the organization that has stayed at home as women were restricted from working at UN agencies. 

After the Taliban had control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the condition of women in the nation has only gone worse. Women in the nation are restricted from leadership positions, and not permitted to work along with travel except for going along with a male partner. 

The Taliban guaranteed to reopen all schools on March 23, 2023, but rather than this, they closed secondary institutions for girls on that same day.  

There is no information on whether these schools will open once again or not.
