Jeep has pulled the plug on the Compass petrol in India as the 1.4-liter turbo-petrol unit does not meet the latest BS6 Phase 2 emissions norms that came into effect this April.
The company had already started phasing out the petrol engine with the discontinuation of the manual variants back in December 2022, following which the petrol engine was only available with the DCT automatic gearbox. However, that too has now been taken out of showrooms.

Why Jeep can’t offer Compass petrol any longer?
- Jeep had proactively halted the creation of the 1.4-liter super petroleum unit internationally because of stricter discharge standards abroad.
- This motor was accessible in business sectors like South America and Europe.
- In most of these markets, the older 1.3-liter turbo petrol engine was replaced by the new one when the updated Compass came out in 2020.

In India, the Compass was sold for between 50 and 60 percent with a petrol engine. In some big cities like Delhi, where diesel is frowned upon, sales of the vehicle reached 80 percent. However, given that Compass only sells about 650 units per month on average, the gasoline models account for 350-400 units per month. Therefore, introducing a brand-new engine at a rate of just a few hundred units per month clearly does not make financial sense.
Jeep Compass Trailhawk was discontinued too
The highest-spec Trailhawk version of the Compass, which featured a 2.0-liter diesel engine and a 4×4 drivetrain, has also been discontinued by Jeep. The model has been taken off the Jeep India website, but some dealers still have a small amount of unsold inventory.
What does this mean for Jeep India?
For a long time to come, the Compass and the Meridian, which are the backbones of the brand in India, will go on with a sole diesel motor, while the leader Fantastic Cherokee and Wrangler are fueled by a petroleum motor. In the mass market segment that is moving away from diesel vehicles, this makes them quite vulnerable.
Considering that the petroleum variations added to a greater part of the Compass’ deals, the organization’s general volumes could see a critical drop.
