Infertility problem, which is extremely common affects up to 186 million people worldwide. According to reports, there are 27.5 million in India alone. Some research suggests a connection, despite the fact that its significance in infertility is not completely understood.

Inflammatory conditions like infection, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and endometriosis raise the risk of infertility. Systemic (body-wide) inflammation, which can affect fertility may affect the cervix, uterus, and placenta.

Dr. Shobha Gupta, the Medical Director and Infertility Specialist at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre in New Delhi, stated that it is a real possibility in an interview with HT Lifestyle. She went on to say that experts noticed a decade ago that women who followed a fertility diet were more likely to get pregnant and ovulate frequently.

A review of a number of studies that were published in the journal Nutrients in 2022 reveals that adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet may assist people who are having trouble becoming pregnant. Even though the diets used in the trials were developed years apart, they share many similarities.

An anti-inflammatory diet may improve the quality of male sperm and increase the success rates of assisted reproductive methods like IVF, although the exact mechanism is unknown. A healthier diet, according to the researchers, may even reduce the need for costly, time-consuming, and invasive fertility treatments.

However, because the quality of the studies and the consistency of the findings varied, additional high-quality research is required to support this. Dr. Shobha Gupta stated, “Improved heart health is only one of the numerous advantages of adopting an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, which also includes eating a plant-based diet like the Mediterranean diet,” when asked if adopting an anti-inflammatory lifestyle will increase fertility.

Even though recent studies are fascinating, there is little evidence that an anti-inflammatory strategy can increase fertility. It is not clear whether this is because there is less inflammation, but there is little to no risk associated with this strategy, and there is a lot of convincing data to suggest that it can also fight disease.

The doctor suggested an anti-inflammatory lifestyle or way of life, which included:

Promote plant-based meal, whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil while avoiding red meat, heavily processed foods, and saturated fats.

Dr. Shobha Gupta came to the following conclusion: “It’s possible that an anti-inflammatory diet or way of living can aid in infertility.” Quit vaping or smoking. Lose weight. Get some exercise. Get enough rest. Manage inflammatory disorders like allergies or rheumatoid arthritis.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol. Manage stress. Irritation might assume a huge and unnoticed part in fruitlessness. However, additional evidence is required to support this. It makes sense to take steps to improve your overall health and possibly reduce chronic inflammation while we wait for more information.
