Story Of MDH Owner: How Did Mahashay Dharampal Gulati Became "King Of Spices"

The “King of Spices” Mahashay Dharampal Gulati is no more. On the early morning of December 3, Thursday MDH owner died after a cardiac arrest. He was undergoing the treatment of Covid-19 at Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, New Delhi.

Here are some facts about his life and his journey from ordinary spice owner to “Spice King.”

Dharampal Gulati aka “Dadaji” was born in undivided India at Sialkot(now in Pakistan) on 27 March 1923. After the partition, he moved to India with his family.

He tried his hands on several businesses such as hardware, carpentry, soap, etc… However, nothing turned out profitable so he began working with his father who owned a small spice shop,” Mahashian Di Hatti.”

Gulati took his father’s business from a small scale to a spice empire. His MDH spices soon became popular and he became “Dadaji” from Dharampal Gulati.

His Contribution To The Society

In 2019, he was also awarded Padma Bhushan by President Ramnath Kovind for his unique contribution to the food processing industry.

He was also a philanthropist and run Mahashay Chunni Lal Charitable Trust to which he gave 90 percent of his salary. Furthermore, Dadaji also financially support people in need.

More than 20 schools were opened under his leadership two of which are after his parent’s name- Mahashay Chunnilal Saraswati Shishu Mandir and Mata Lilawati Kanya Vidyalaya.

Besides this, he had also established an eye hospital in 1975 which was a 10-bed hospital. In 1984, he established another hospital with more bed facilities in Janakpuri, New Delhi.

At present both the hospitals have facilities to accommodate more patients and equipped with modern technologies.
