National Youth Day is celebrated on 12th of January every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of one of the prominent and truest monks, that is Swami Vivekananda. He wished to be honored on his birth anniversary through the celebration of National Youth Day because he always envisioned the path of enlightenment for the youths. 

He used to be recognized for his profound belief in the potential of youth and inspiring the youth for their contribution in nation-building through the philosophies of Swami Vivekananda on service with honesty, unity with loyalty and self- realization with mindfulness.

Swami Vivekananda Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The actual name of Swami Vivekananda is Narendranath Datta. He was born on 12th of January in the year 1863. He was an Indian Hindu monk, religious teacher, philosopher, author and the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. 

When he was 18 years old, he met Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and became his devoted disciple because in his early ages he was attracted towards religion along with spiritual aspects and after meeting Ramakrishna Paramhamsa he entirely got indulged into practicing religious beliefs and spirituality. 

He worked for introducing the concepts of the classical Yoga and the Advaita Vedanta to be widely spread in the Western world. His philosophies always worked for the encouragement and motivation of the younger generation since he thought that the youths will help in shaping the future of a better world. 

History of National Youth Day 

National Youth Day was declared to be celebrated on the birth anniversary of the Swami Vivekananda annually, that is every year. This announcement for declaring was done in the year of 1984 by the government of India under the Prime Minister- ship of revered Indira Gandhi and under the President- ship of revered Giani Zail Singh. This decision was taken because of several reasons which includes the belief of the government that the philosophies of the Swami Vivekananda and the ideals through which he lived throughout his life and worked upon it will be a really great source of inspiration for the National Indian Youth Day.
