India’s First Underwater Tunnel is Nearly Completed, Starts in 2023

The construction of India’s first underwater metro tunnel in Kolkata is nearly completed. It is built under the Hooghly river to provide connectivity between Kolkata and Howrah. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) confirmed that 80% work on the tunnel is completed and it will be inaugurated in 2023.

1. The project was funded by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL). 

2. The total budget of the project is 750 million USD.

3. The metro tunnel project will connect Salt from the east and Howrah from the west.

4. The total length of the entire tunnel is 16.6 km long, out of which only 10.8 is under the ground. From this 10.8 km, 502 meters is only under the water. 

5. The tunnel features 12 stations with a distance of 16.6 km. Out of which, six are under the ground and six are on the elevated tracks. 

6. The station line that will be built under the Hooghly river is 33 meters below the riverbed.

7. In an interview, the site supervisor with Mithun Ghosh revealed the facilities and safety measures provided in the project. He said there would be walkways in the tunnel for the evacuation of passengers in case of any emergency.
