Centre notifies elevation of 5 judges to Supreme Court. PV Sanjay Kumar, CJ Manipur HC; Sanjay Karol, CJ Patna HC; Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Patna HC; Justices Pankaj Mithal, CJ Rajasthan HC; and Manoj Misra, Allahabad HC are elevated to Supreme Court’s premises. 

The new judges took oath at 10:30 am today. Supreme Court strength has now elevated to 32 with two vacancies.

New Supreme Court Judges Take Oath

The new Supreme Court judges took oath under the administration of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The new joiners took an oath at the ceremony held at the court’s auditorium in its new building premises.

The list of new judges that took oath at SC today includes:

  1. P V Sanjay Kumar
  2. Sanjay Karol
  3. Ahsanuddin Amanullah
  4. Pankaj Mithal
  5. Manoj Misra

P V Sanjay Kumar

He was born on August 14, 1963, and after his graduation in Commerce from Nizam College, Hyderabad, he acquired his LLB degree from Delhi University in 1988. He was elevated to the bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court as an additional judge on August 8, 2008, and was appointed as a permanent judge of the court on January 20, 2010. Most recently, he took his oath as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court on February 14, 2021.

Sanjay Karol

Justice Karol was born on August 23, 1961, and is an alumnus of St. Edward School of Shimla. He achieved honors in History at Government Degree College, Shimla. He has extensive experience, having practiced in multiple courts, including the Supreme Court. On November 9, 2018, he was named Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court and, the following year, was appointed to the same position at the Patna High Court.

Ahsanuddin Amanullah

He was born on May 11, 1963, and became a member of the Bihar State Bar Council on September 27, 1991. From March 2006 to August 2010, he served as a standing counsel for the state government. On October 10, 2021, he was moved to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and he was returned to the Patna High Court on June 20, 2022.

Pankaj Mithal

Justice Mithal, born on June 17, 1961, earned his commerce degree from Allahabad University in 1982 and began practicing in the Allahabad High Court three years later. Having been sworn in as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on July 7, 2006, he was later appointed a permanent judge on July 2, 2008. Last October, he became the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

Manoj Misra

Justice Misra was born on the 2nd of June, 1965, and began practicing as an advocate on the 12th of December, 1988. On the 21st of November, 2011, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court, and was sworn in as a permanent judge on the 6th of August, 2013.

List of Vacancies in High Court

Law Today, shared data on vacancies in High Courts, as submitted by the Law Ministry before Parliament. Allahabad HC has the highest number of vacancies with only 96 sitting judges from the sanctioned strength of 160. Sikkim HC is the only HC to function with the complete strength of 3 judges.
