Wrestling runs in the blood of Haryanvi-Jat, Bajrang Punia, who came from a rural part of India and shined several times on the world stage. The 65kg freestyle wrestler is a former World No. 1, first to get the status in any category.

He was born in the Jhajjar district of Haryana on 26th February 1994. His father was a wrestler too who always encouraged him for the sport. The young Punia started his training at a very young age and later moved to Sonepat for professional training.

Punia got married to Sangita Phogat in 2020. She is also a freestyle wrestler in the 59 Kg category and the youngest of all Phogat sisters. Sangita is also a silver medalist at National Level.

Love for wrestling continued to bloom in the heart and mind of young Punia since childhood but he got a chance to show his skills at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship for the first time. He made it to the semi-finals in the first attempt but lost to North Korea’s Hwang Ryong-Hak. This was the first bronze of his life.

He got another chance to claim gold, this time at the world stage of the World Wrestling Championship in 2013. Unfortunately, he again had to be satisfied with bronze losing against a Mongolian wrestler. Bajrang Punia won a total of 3 medals (2 bronze, and 1 silver), the highest by any wrestler, in the World Championship.

  • Gold at 2017 Asian Championships, Asian Indoor, and Martial Games
  • 2 gold, 1 silver, and a bronze medal in 2018
  • Two silvers back to back in Asian Championships in 2020 and 2021
