It is not a novel idea to complete more work in less time to take more time off. We can all thank Ford Motor Company—as well as the Industrial Revolution—for the current five-day work as opposed to the previous six days.

By September of the same year, what began as an experiment at some plants in July 1926 became company policy.

How Many Hours Are We Really Working?

According to data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the lowest annual average number of hours worked by employed people in 2020 was 1,332 (or 25,6 hours per week) in Germany.

Canadians work 1,664 hours per week, while Americans put in an average of 1,767 hours. The British work 26 hours, the Spaniards work 30 hours, and the Japanese work 31 hours, among other places, experimenting with four-day workweeks.

Taking a look at these figures, it would appear that workers in some other nations have even more free time than the average worker in the United States who is 16 or older.

A condensed workweek has been successful for many businesses and employees, resulting in increased productivity and more time for personal pursuits. However, not all industries, businesses, or individuals can adhere to a four-day schedule. In addition, it will not alleviate an unpleasant job or a toxic workplace.
