After a decade of the same look, Wikipedia is finally getting a makeover. The Wikimedia Foundation, which is responsible for the website, recently announced changes to the desktop interface of Wikipedia, which are designed to make it easier to use and more welcoming for readers and contributors. These improvements will be visible to all desktop users of Wikipedia.

Users will be able to read content in multiple languages

The Wikimedia Foundation has increased the visibility of their language-switching tools, allowing readers and editors to quickly and easily find and switch between more than 300 languages.

A better reading experience

The Wikimedia Foundation has determined that Wikipedia articles should now have a maximum line width in order to provide a more comfortable reading experience and improved comprehension of the content. Studies have shown this to be true.

There’s a new sidebar

A new collapsible sidebar has been added to Wikipedia, allowing users to reduce the size of the lengthy menu found on the left side of each article and focus on the information they need without being distracted.

Users will now have to scroll less

Wikimedia Foundation announced that the header on the page now moves with you as you scroll, so that you no longer need to go back to the top to find what you need and can instead concentrate on reading and editing.

A better search experience

The search process on Wikipedia has been improved with the inclusion of images and descriptions, making it simpler for users to locate articles.

New table of contents

A new table of contents has been implemented to help users keep track of the section they are reading and to make it easy to navigate to different parts of the page as they scroll.
