Why the Finance Ministry Banned ChatGPT and DeepSeek: What You Need to Know

India’s Finance Ministry has asked its employees to avoid using AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek for any office work. The government believes that such AI tools are a threat to the confidentiality of government documents and data.

This information has been received from Internal Department Advisory. Countries like Australia and Italy have also banned the use of DeepSeek, citing data security risks.

Advisory Report Leaked on Social Media

The report of this advisory surfaced on social media on Tuesday. Meanwhile, OpenAI Chief Sam Altman is going to visit India on Wednesday, where he will also meet the IT Minister.

The ministry’s advisory issued on January 29 said, ‘It has been decided that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek) in office computers and devices pose a threat to the confidentiality of government data and documents.’

No Official Response from the Finance Ministry Yet

However, no response has been received so far on this matter from the Finance Ministry of India, representatives of ChatGPT-parent OpenAI and DeepSeek. Three Finance Ministry officials said the note was genuine and was issued internally this week.
