A report by the economic think tank GTRI suggests that India will increase its reliance on China for raw materials, mineral processing, and battery production for the production of electric vehicles.

GTRI which stands for the global trade research initiative also revealed that there is a requirement for life cycle influence evaluation for the electric vehicle industry.

At the time of production of the battery, its disposal, and charging, a lot of pollutants are released and almost 70% of things used to produce EVs in our company are taken from China and some from other countries, it revealed.

“The Electric Vehicle will lead to the dependency of our country on China for getting the raw materials, mineral processing as well as battery production.”

China has purchased the biggest lithium mines in Australia and South America. It produced over 60% of the lithium generated over the world. It also makes about 65% of cobalt as well as 93% of manganese.

China produces three out of every four batteries made in the world, it revealed, including more than one-hundred Chinese battery units that generate 60% of the cathodes as well as 80% of the anodes utilized in lithium-ion batteries.

The Highlights Of The Report

The report highlights that electric vehicles have an impact on jobs as well as pollution and it recognized 13 problems associated with the interests of consumers, industry, and the government also.

The problems are the high prices of EVs, the fit of the vehicle for the long run, the performance in adverse weather, grown power demand, lesser usable for public transport, grown reliance on China, no minimization in pollution, obstacles in the auto component industry, and lack of availability of lithium.

The co-founder of GTRI, Ajay Srivastava stated “the Electric Vehicles having lithium–ion batteries are at best a work-in-progress revolution. we must acknowledge the long-term influence of the same on jobs, pollution levels, imports, and economic growth.”

Electric Vehicles and Metals

On the thing related to pollution, it described that a basic 500 kg lithium car battery utilizes 12kg of lithium, 15kg of cobalt, 30kg of nickel, 44kg of copper, and lastly, 50kg of graphite.
