A report claims that since Elon Musk established a strong presence on the platform and fired a sizable section of the staff, Twitter outages have become more common. Even Twitter staff have grown accustomed to these outages because they have become so frequent. Many users reported having problems with the platform on Monday, including broken links and the inability to view tweets from other users.

Twitter users also reported seeing a cryptic message that, “Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api for more information.”

In response to the outage and a tweet from the handle, Twitter’s official support account “Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now. We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed.”

The cause of the downtime, which had mostly impacted American users, has now been revealed. According to Platformer, the engineer who is only in charge of handling the tech giant’s API made a mistake.

Why was Twitter down last night?

According to the report, Twitter’s project to end free API access was what caused the internal change that Twitter Support mentioned in its tweet.

Twitter has previously stated that it will no longer allow free access to its API and would instead make it available as a subscription service. “From February 9 we will no longer allow free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1,” the company’s official developer account tweeted. Instead, a paid basic tier will be offered.

Despite Elon Musk’s considerable cost-cutting measures, only one engineer has been allocated to the project, according to the Platformer report. Sadly, on Monday, this developer changed the configuration in such a way that, in the words of a Twitter employee, it caused the Twitter API. Users consequently noticed a confusing message in their twitter feeds.

Not only did the API change take down the platform, but it also had negative effects on the company and Twitter’s internal tools. The source goes on to say that while Elon Musk was ‘furious,’ the other engineers at the company worked hard to resolve the problem.

Elon Musk’s tweet

Musk had also tweeted about the outage and wrote while replying to a user, “A small API change had massive ramifications. The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.”

The issue was resolved by the team and Twitter Support had confirmed the same last night. “Things should now be working as normal. Thanks for sticking with us,” a tweet on its handle.
