Onion prices are continuously increasing. At present, onion is available at Rs 35 to 40 per kg. According to the Crisil report, onion prices may reach Rs 60-70 per kg by early September. Onion prices have started increasing in the domestic market. In the capital Delhi, onion reached the price of Rs 37 per kg on Saturday.

According to the Consumer Ministry data, onion prices have increased sharply in the first three weeks of August itself. Meanwhile, onion prices have become costlier in 275 cities, while in 175 cities, onion is still being sold in the market at the same price as on August 1.

According to the ministry, the costliest onion was sold in Hojai (Assam) on Friday, with a price of Rs 49 per kg. This is an increase of Rs 19 as compared to August 1. In Delhi too, the price of onion was Rs 32 per kg on Friday, but here it has increased by only Rs 2 as compared to August 1. According to media reports, due to the low stock of old onions in the market, onion prices may increase further in September.

Last year, onions were sold for Rs 2 per 1 kg.

It’s impossible for anyone to say when Vegeta’s fortunes will turn. In August last year, onions were being sold at Rs 2 per kg. Now the same onion has reached Rs 30-40 per kg. This means onion prices have increased 15 times. According to experts, onion prices may increase further in the coming days.

Government is taking steps to control the Prices

The government wants to control the prices till the new onion crop arrives by October. Last week, buffer stocks of onions in certain areas were released in the market. Also, efforts are being made to sell onion at a discount through e-auction, e-commerce platforms, partnerships with state authorities.

3 Lakh Tonnes of Onion are available with the Government

At present, the government has stored 3 lakh Tonnes of onions in the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF). This will be used to contain the inflation coming from the shortage of onions in the market.
