Jailed Gangster-Politician Mukhtar Ansari Dies Of Heart Attack, Son Seeks Parole To Attend Last Rites

Mukhtar Ansari, the five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday evening, after which a probe was ordered to investigate his death.

The gangster-politician, who was lodged in Banda district jail, was rushed to Rani Durgavati Medical College as his health deteriorated reportedly after he ended his Ramzan fast. Doctors were first called to the jail to treat him, but he was rushed to the hospital after medics suspected he had a cardiac arrest.

He was brought to the hospital at 8.25 pm in an unconscious state. A panel of nine doctors were treating him, but he died of cardiac arrest.

Meanwhile, a magisterial probe was ordered to investigate the death of Mukhtar Ansari, after his family alleged foul play. Speaking to reporters, Ansari’s son, Umar Ansari, said his father was given poison through the food served to him.

Was Hospitalised On March 26 

On March 26, Ansari was hospitalized for around 14 hours after he complained of abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital, sources said. The doctors had advised him to undergo surgery.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party and other Opposition leaders paid condolences to Ansari’s family.

Who Was Mukhtar Ansari?

Mukhtar Ansari was a former five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat and had been behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He spent two years in a Punjab prison and was brought back to the Banda jail in April 2021.

He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts of UP and was lodged in the Banda jail. His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year.

Meanwhile, the police have increased vigilance in Banda and other areas, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Mau, and Ghazipur. Orders have also been given to increase patrolling of the police forces in sensitive areas.
