The whole of Buenos Aires was in a frenzy of Lionel Messi-mania as Argentina played in a triumphant 2-0 win over Panama in a celebration match to honor their World Cup victory last December. The “WORLD CHAMPIONS RULED THE GAME”, refusing to even let a goal through until the 78th minutes until Thiago Almada delivered a stunning strike from the free kick sent in by Messi, smashing it off the goal post!

No more than 10 minutes later, Messi had scored the incredible 800th goal of his professional career with an absolutely perfect free kick! Now, he is just one goal away from a monumental 100-goal feat for the national squad!

A New Record for Messi!

Messi is only the second ever player to have achieved 800 goals, with Ronaldo holding the title of the all-time record holder of career goals (830).

The celebrations were in full swing after the match, with Messi taking pride of place as his eyes were sparkling with joy whilst receiving awards and commendations.

  • “I want to thank you for all the love we’ve been receiving . . . We told you we were going to do everything possible to win this,” Messi told. “Let’s enjoy this because we went a long time without winning it, and we don’t know when we’ll win it again.
  • “Let’s keep doing what we are doing and enjoy this, because we have been waiting a long time to win it again. Let’s enjoy the third star.”

An emotional Scaloni also added: “Eternal gratitude to these players. Football belongs to them, and without them we wouldn’t have won the World Cup.

-He dominated Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa and celebrated his world record with a double against Liechtenstein, scoring a penalty and a free-kick to seal the win.
