Maharana Pratap, also known as Mewari Rana, was born on 9 May 1540. He is known for his courage, dignity, and strength all around the world. Maharana Pratap’s father Uday Singh II was the founder of the Udaipur region and he was the 12th ruler of the Kingdom of Mewar. He was the fourth son of Rana Sanga and Rani Karnavati, a princess of Bundi. Maharanaji died on January 19, 1597, due to hunting injuries at the age of 56. On the occasion of his death anniversary, let’s pay him tribute and talk about the lion-hearted efforts that made him stand against the Mughals.

Maharana Pratap died on January 19, 1597, due to unforeseen hunting injuries. The leader played a vital role in countering the Mughals when almost every part of the country was captured by them.

Battle of Haldighati

Akbar, King of the Mughal Emperor, wanted to capture the Mewar region that was Maharana Pratap’s kingdom. Mughals wanted to capture the area as it was the only route leading to the Gujrat ports. However, our leader stood against the Mughals despite a significant difference in their armies. Akbar later announced a battle against Pratapji to capture Mewar region.

The battle of Haldighati was fought on 18 June 1576 in Gogunda (currently Udaipur). Mewari Rana had an army with just about 3000-4000 soldiers whereas Akbar had a gigantic troop of 85,000 people. Regardless of such a difference, the leader stood on the battlefield until the very last decisive moments.

However, the battle ended in favor of the Mughals, and Maharana somehow was carted out of the battle. Chetak, Maharana Pratap’s horse played a very crucial role in a succesful escape from the battlefield. Chetak is very well known for his speed and courage, similar to his owner Pratapji.

Maharanaji Pratap was a brave warrior and was very well known for his burdensome strength. He used to carry a Javelin of 81kgs and armor of 71kgs. Reports say that, he carried a total weight of 208kgs that included his spear, armor, shield and two swords.

Interesting Facts About Maharana Pratap 

  • Maharana Pratap’s family consisted of 11 wives and 22 childrens (including Amar Singh, Bhagwandas and 5 daughters).
  • Maharana Pratap’s height stood at 2.26 meters (7.4 feet).
  • Maharana Pratap defeated the Mughal Emperor three consecutive times in 1577, 1578, and 1579.
  • When former US President Abraham Lincoln asked his mother what to bring from India, she said to bring the soil from Haldighati.
  • Pratapji gave up everything but never bowed his head, and alone among all the princes of Hind maintained his honor. We are all grateful to Maharana Pratap on his death anniversary (Maharana Pratap Punyatithi 2022) today for his bravery and sacrifice of a true national hero.
  • In the Battle of Haldighati in 1576, Maharana, along with about twenty thousand Rajputs, faced the army of eighty thousand of the Mughal Sardar Raja Man Singh. Shakti Singh saved Maharana, who was surrounded by enemy army. This war lasted for only one day, but seventeen thousand people were killed in it.
