26 July 1999, a date to be remembered forever in the history of India that marked the victory over Pakistan. More than 500 heroes had sacrificed their lives during the 60 days long Kargil war that began in May 1999. To pay homage and remember their extraordinary tales, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated across the nation.

1. Captain Vikram Batra

These were the words of the Hero of the Kargil war, Captain Vikram Batra. He had accomplished a few of the toughest missions of the Indian army during his service. He was given several titles such as “Lion of Kargil” aka Sher Shah and Tiger of Drass.

Vikram Batra was awarded one of the prestigious awards of India Param Vir Chakra after he became a martyr in the war. He was only 24 then.

2. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav

“A soldier is like a selfless lover, he doesn’t think twice before risking his life.”

The Param Vir Chakra awardee told the real definition of a soldier during an interview. Yogendra Singh was shot several times during the mission but didn’t let the Pakistani army succeed. He destroyed several bunkers and killed enemies.

The Bollywood movie Lakshya was the depiction of his Tiger Hill mission with his platoon. He was also the youngest ever to receive the highest wartime gallantry award.

3. Lieutenant Balwan Singh

Lieutenant Balwan Singh shocked the enemies by climbing with his Ghatak platoon on Tiger hill via the toughest route. Pakistani army didn’t expect that India could opt for that route as it was 16500 ft high and full of snow and steep falls.

He succeeded with his troop, killed enemies, and flagged tricolor on the hill. This move was instrumental in the Kargil war for which Lieutenant Balwan Singh was awarded Mahavir Chakra.

4. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey

Captain Manoj Pandey became a martyr during Operation Vijay but fulfilled his only dream to join the Indian army. He was one of the three officers who were honored with the Param Vir Chakra for their courage and sacrifice. The 24-years old was an officer from Gorkha Rifles.

5. Major Vivek Gupta

His leadership was the reason the Indian army succeeded in capturing the Tololing Top. For his great leadership, and forfeit, he was honored with Mahavir Chakra posthumously.

Captain N Kenguruse, Major SaurabhKalia, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, Digendra Kumar, and all soldiers are the heroes who made Operation Vijay successful.

22 years of Kargil Vijay Diwas have been passed but the memories are still fresh. On this occasion, President Ram Nath Kovid, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the entire nation have paid their sincere tribute to every single soldier who lost their lives for the nation.
