‘KANTARA’ Movie: The Next Mega Blockbuster After KGF2

What Does ‘Kantara’ Mean?

‘Kantara’ is a Kannada word that means the mysterious forest (mayavi jungle).

This word has a Sanskrit origin and is widely used in Yakshagana(a form of traditional theater, very famous in some parts of Karnataka and Kerala).

What Is Tulu Nadu?

1. PANJURLI

In Tulu, the divine spirit of a male wild boar is referred to as Panjurli. The backstory is that the wild bores use to destroy farmers' crops.

Therefore, they decided to pray to the boar spirit to halt the destruction.

3. GULIGA

One of the second deities is Guliga. In Tulu culture, it is revered as a kshetrapala, or protector of territory.

The interesting fact about Guliga is it is not worshiped in any form of sculpture but rather as a small rectangular stone kept under the shade of a tree.

Both deities are totally opposite in nature. One has forgiving nature whereas the other can make you suffer or even kill for breaking the promise made to it.

They are worshiped together in an event called “Bhoota Kola”.

What Is Bhoota Kola?

Bhoota means past and Kola means to worship. Thus, the festival is celebrated to worship the deities of the past i.e.

Panjurli and Guliga. Both are the ancient gods of Tulu Nadu.
