A Delhi-based app developer predicted Reliance JioCinem. Jio Hotstar’s domain app developer has purchased the Jiohoster domain on the internet. The boy has posted a letter on https://jiohotstar.com. Through the letter, he has demanded money (about RS 94 lakh) from Reliance Industries in exchange for giving the domain.
The developer said that he will give this domain to Reliance Industries only if the company funds him for further studies. The developer wants to raise funds towards tuition fees to study EMBA at Cambridge University
The developer said that Reliance’s Assistant Vice President (Commercials) Ambujesh Yadav had contacted him and discussed the domain, but he has rejected the offer. Reliance has asked to take legal action regarding the domain name.
App developer’s letter
Without disclosing his name, the app developer wrote, ‘I am an app developer in Delhi and working on my startup. While scrolling through social media in early 2023, I came over a news story which stated that Disney + Hotstar is persistently losing its active users after losing the streaming license of IPL and Disney + Hotstar is considering offering or blending it with an Indian competitor.
After reading this news, it came to my mind that there is talk of merger between Sony and Zee, hence Reliance owned company Viacom 18 would remain the only big company to buy Disney + Hotstar.
I felt like when Jio bought the music streaming service Saavn, they rebranded it to Jio Saavn and changed the domain from Saavn.com to JioSaavn.com. That’s why I thought it could happen this time too, they can name this domain Jiohotstar.com.
Cambridge University has a full degree program in Entrepreneurship. It was my dream to study this, but I could not afford it. If this merger happens, it will fulfill my dream of studying in Cambridge.
The developer has posted an update on the letter, stating that a Reliance official had contacted him. According to the letter, the boy has asked the company for tuition fees for his EMBA program, which has been rejected. It is written in the letter that the company will adopt a legal route in the matter.
However, the developer is still hopeful that his request will be considered. He also wrote that when Jio-Hotstar did not even exist, that’s when he bought this domain. He also expressed his inability to fight a legal battle against a company like Reliance. He also told people that if anyone could provide him legal help, he would be grateful.

What is a domain?
- In the Internet world, a domain is the address of a website, which is used to make the website accessible on the Internet. It is also a unique identifier of the website, through which users can access the website by browsing the web. The domain has two parts. It consists of a top-level domain (TLD) and a second-level domain (SLD).
- TLD – This is the topmost part of the domain and it tells the type of website or the address of the corresponding republic. Like- .com (commercial), .org (organization), .net (network), .gov (government) and .edu (educational) etc.
- SLD – It comes below the top-level domain and is the special name of the website. For example, google is an SLD when it comes to google.com.
- Domain managers register new domain names. Domains are translated into IP addresses through the Domain Name System (DNS) so that computers can locate and connect to resources on the Internet.
- When you type a domain name into a web browser, the DNS system translates that name into a corresponding IP address, allowing you to access the website.
