Japanese Women Fashion: Taking differential rules for men and women at the workplace, women in Japan have started an online movement against workplace dress codes, which requires heels.
As per the latest reports, while both men and women are presumed to wear suits during the time of job hunting and to their workplace, heels are the de facto (existing) dress code for working women in Japan as usually flats are disapproved for females.
‘#KuToo’, which takes its calligraphy style from the #MeToo movement, is a hashtag, under which Twitter users have called for a change in formal dress code for women.
Calling it the modern version of foot-binding, female Twitter users have expressed agitation over the socially systematic practice of wearing heels at the workplace.
One of the Twitter users said, “I want them to get rid of pumps for job hunting. Pumps are the modern equivalent of foot-binding. It’s a mistake to force women to wear them. Do they say it’s proper manners to wear them? It’s a medical injury!”
Another Japanese woman tweeted, “Wearing uncomfortable and harmful shoes is not an obligation. Let’s break down misogyny together.”
Wearing heels, either at work or while traveling, is a common cause of injury and cuts among women, and with other complications related to the spine, more and more medical complications can be caused.
Doctors have warned that when you wear high heeled shoes, your feet are in an unnatural condition which can inhibit blood circulation to the feet.
