The technology is expected to be accompanied by a circular cutout for the front-facing camera, as the sensor issues have pushed back the release of the feature from the expected launch of 2024’s iPhone 16 Pro models. This advancement will provide a seamless user experience and will offer more real estate for the display.

Challenges

However, the under-display camera armed with the iPhone 17 Pro might have a few challenges. For instance, the under-display camera is expected to have only 4MP, which is significantly lower than the 12MP used in the current iPhone 14 Pro. This lower quality camera could be due to the Super Retina display with a PPI of around 400-500, as it can reduce the light received by the front cameras, ultimately impacting image quality.

Apple Working to Find Solutions

To counter this issue, if Apple lowers the PPI of the under-display front camera, it could cause a “screen door effect”, where the display shows visible pixelation. Apple is working to overcome these challenges and provide the perfect under-display camera solution without compromising image quality.
