What to Expect from iOS 17 – from Sideloading to Support for MR Headset

The upcoming June release of Apple’s mobile operating system update is just around the corner. According to reports, the Cupertino-based company is allegedly paying less attention to iOS 17 in favor of its upcoming MR headset. The feature list for iOS 17 is probably going to be much shorter than the one for iOS 16, which includes significant functionality and design upgrades.

Support for sideloading apps?

According to a Bloomberg story, Apple employees are working on modifications to iOS that would allow users to download apps not available in the App Store. To comply with EU laws, the company plans to act by 2024. But, the actual release of iOS 17 itself may bring about modifications. Developers will be able to avoid paying Apple fees of 15% to 30% if the modifications are put into effect.

Nevertheless, it’s also possible that Apple will only make the modifications in the EU and maintain its current practices in all other locations.

Browsers from third parties without Webkit

Apple offers third-party browsers, but there is one significant limitation. The company demands that WebKit, which is Safari’s rendering engine, be used by all browsers. Yet, claims that the WebKit requirement is anti-competitive are also part of the mounting antitrust pressure on Apple. If and when Apple abandons the WebKit with iOS 17, as appears to be the case due to the European Digital Markets Act, we may see browsers on the App Store that offer more feature variety.

It’s expected that Apple will eventually release its long-rumored mixed-reality headset this year. It has been predicted that the device will work independently and have its own App Store. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that there will be some kind of connectivity between the headset and the iPhone given that Apple is known for its ecosystem, where devices communicate with one another in a variety of ways. On iOS 17, we might see some features specific to headsets.

CarPlay Updates

A preview of an improved CarPlay experience with better automotive connection was presented by Apple during the WWDC 2022 event, enabling automobile features like radio and volume to be controlled through CarPlay. Additionally, the company plans to provide widgets and support for multiple displays. Support for next-gen CarPlay will probably be included in iOS 17, with the first automobiles using it set to debut in 2023.

iOS 17 release date

Apple introduces the first developer beta of new iOS versions in June every year and iOS 17 is expected to be no different. Following a period of testing, the first stable version will become available with the launch of the iPhone 15 series in September.
