You Can Now Use Google Maps On Wear OS Smartwatches Without a Phone.

Google indicated that for this to be possible, the smartwatch needs to either be LTE-enabled or connected to the internet via WiFi.

Google has revealed that those who own a smartwatch powered by Wear OS 3 and equipped with LTE connectivity can now access Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions, even when the watch is not connected to a smartphone.

The tech giant announced on its official blog that if you have a watch with LTE or WiFi capabilities, you now have the benefit of having access to maps right on your wrist. This is especially beneficial if you’re out running or biking and don’t have your phone with you, but need help navigating or finding your way back.

It is important to take note of the following before using the feature:

  1. To ensure successful navigation, users should enable location tracking on their phone and smartwatch.
  2. Maps may be affected by the power-saving mode.
  3. Not all languages and countries or regions have enabled certain voice commands.
  4. Maps on Wear devices use the distance unit set on the paired phone.
  5. Maps currently provide navigation services for cycling, driving, and walking.

Once you have enabled mirroring and initiated navigation on the handset, you can use the smartwatch for navigation and leave the handset behind.

  1. Use the Maps app on your watch to enter your destination using either a voice command or a keyboard tool.
  2. Choose your mode of transportation and check the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your destination.
  3. Begin the journey towards the destination.
