A lost electronic device with an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, such as a smartphone, can now be quickly reported to a local police station using a new website that the Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications has launched called Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). Users of the CEIR website can use the website to block a stolen or lost mobile, unblock a found mobile, and even find out more information about a used smartphone.

In addition, the free KYM (know your mobile) app for Android and iOS can provide information on the condition of your smartphone. It provides information on the device kind, model number, and IMEI number status as well as the name of the mobile device maker. The only requirements are the IMEI number (which can be found on the bill, box, and phone by dialling *#06#), as well as a phone number that can receive OTP.

How to report a stolen or lost phone on the CEIR website?
Right now, all 37 states offer CEIR service (including union territories). In order to report a lost or stolen smartphone, one needs information such as the IMEI number, the mobile purchase invoice, and the mobile numbers of the SIM cards inserted on the phone.

How to unblock a found mobile?
By entering the information such as the request ID, mobile number, and the reason for unblocking on the CEIR website, you can unblock a stolen or lost mobile phone if you have found it. Without unblocking the phone, the device will be disabled, and won’t be of any use.
