Cyclone Michaung : 5 Dead In Chennai Amid Heavy Rain, Govt Declares Public Holiday

At least five people were killed in several rain-related incidents in Chennai following heavy rainfall and gusty winds in the city triggered by Cyclone Michaung. Flight operations at Chennai airport were affected as the runway was flooded, several flights were canceled and others diverted given heavy rain due to Cyclone Michaung which the IMD said intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Monday.

Flight operations have been suspended till 9 am on Tuesday owing to severe weather conditions. Earlier, arrivals at the Chennai airport were suspended between 9:17 am and 11:30 am.

Cyclone Michanug Hit Tamil Nadu

On Monday, as Cyclone Michaung got closer to the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, heavy rain fell on Chennai all night. Weighty downpour prompted extreme waterlogging and because of the increment of water levels in low-lying regions, a mugger crocodile was spotted out and about.At St Thomas metro station, water up to 4 feet had accumulated and access to enter the station had been cut off. Passengers were advised to board the metro train at Alandur.

Chennai Police Reports Death Of 5 People

The Chennai police said they received reports of five deaths across the city due to the heavy downpour. The body of an unidentified man aged around 70 years was found on a platform near the Vaidyanathan flyover. Another body of an unidentified woman aged around 60 years was found at the Foreshore Estate bus depot.

Tamil Nadu Government Declares Public Holiday

On Monday and Tuesday, the Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu will observe a public holiday. In the wake of Michaung, it advised employees of private companies to “work from home.” Fundamental administrations, for example, milk supply and medical services offices would be functional.
