Coaches Hold the Mighty Power of Guiding “Weak” Captains – IPL Takes Inspiration from Football

What’s new on the plate of IPL?

This time, legendary cricketers, Daniel Vettori and Dale Steyn are blazing a trail towards a new era in cricket – they’re avid supporters of closer coach-captain communication and an expanded role for coaches. The IPL and the sport as a whole is at a decisive junction, with exciting possibilities on the horizon.

Who would have thought that Nitish Rana, Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson, and KL Rahul could rise to be the rightful leaders of their IPL teams? These names may not have been the first that came to mind in our search for intellectual and charismatic captains, but fate has chosen them nonetheless.

Such unpredictability spurs excitement and anticipation for what these unconventional leaders might bring to the table. And who knows, even the untested Suryakumar Yadav may soon embark on a thrilling journey as Mumbai Indians captain if Rohit Sharma decides to take a break.

It’s an exhilarating time for the IPL, so buckle up and let’s see where this ride takes us.

A Learning Experience

In the previous year, Ashish Nehra was observed sitting dejectedly on the staircase leading to the dressing room while holding a paper in his hand. He later referred to it as a “menu for the night”, although it apparently included the order of the bowlers.

Perceptions were that he would often be seen energetically gesturing to Hardik Pandya from the dugout, suggesting which bowler should take the next over, such as “Let’s have Rashid Khan bowl one more over,” or “Bring on this particular fast bowler now.” Hardik has neither objected nor ignored such counsel but rather actively sought and implemented it.

His old coach said that:” Hardik has no ego in that sense. Advertisements are one thing, the real Hardik is another. He has always been a good listener, has always followed good advice, he might do his thing in the end but always listens first to the people he trusts. And he trusts Nehra a lot. He is not a fool to say ‘I know everything, I will do it my way or what will people think?’ He knows and values good suggestions.”

A Coach- Captain Leadership

The prevalent T20 format is paving the way for cricket to delve into exciting realms. Daniel Vettori, former coach of RCB and a regular presence on the field, suggests the necessity of establishing a communication channel between the captain and the coach during the final phases of the game.

Vettori’s recommendation to “Mike us up” highlights the importance of effective communication during crucial moments in the game.

Vettori divulged an enlightening insight, highlighting the benefits that it would impart to a fledgling skipper. This is the current situation in the tumultuous world of T20 leagues, where charismatic and strategic leaders are hard to come by among the plethora of teams. It’s the gurus on the sidelines who are gradually taking control of the reins and steering their teams towards glory.

What will be KKR’s decision?

KKR boasts experienced players, such as Shakib Al Hasan and Tim Southee, who have previously captained their national teams. However, while they occupy one of the limited overseas slots in the playing XI, their individual approaches and ideas may not necessarily align with the coaching staff’s instructions.

This suggests that captaincy may be a skill that necessitates more than just the captain’s involvement, or possibly that franchises undervalue the importance of a strong captaincy role.

Rana perceived the additional responsibility that accompanied the “c” in his name as insignificant, considering that the team’s efforts collectively contributed to its success. He said “I will benefit from their experience and the guidance of Chandu sir. So, I’m not feeling any pressure from the added burden of captaincy,”.

Nevertheless, at times, an individual entrusted with the position of a captain, being perceived initially as only a nominal authority, may gradually develop the qualities requisite to lead effectively and ultimately exceed expectations.

Guidance of the Coach

In the case of Hardik Pandya, it was assumed he would serve as a symbolic skipper, adhering strictly to the guidance of coach Gary Kirsten. However, he astounded many by leading the Gujarat Titans to victory with his dynamic approach, thereby earning him the opportunity to serve as captain for the Indian T20I team.

Consequently, he is now regarded as a prospective successor to Rohit Sharma in the realm of white-ball cricket. It is speculative to determine the extent to which remote-controlled decision-making will progress.
