According to reports, Microsoft Edge is developing a new function that will improve the quality of videos streamed on the Web. It will use Nvidia GPUs to both upgrade low-resolution videos and remove artifacts.

About half of users should have access to the new capabilities as the company has already started testing them for Windows users on the browser’s testing channel.

According to the company, if you enable it, the functionality would allow you to watch crystal-clear videos on YouTube and other streaming platforms without sacrificing bandwidth.

The company released information about the new feature on its blog on Wednesday, the experimental video enhancement feature, powered by AI technology is called Video Super Resolution (VSR) and upscales low-resolution videos while removing blocky artifacts, using machine learning.

What is the Requirement to Use VSR?

The video super-resolution (VSR) function of Microsoft Edge won’t be available to all users.

According to Microsoft users have to meet the following requirements to use..

  • Users must ensure that their device has a GPU of AMD RX5700-RX7800 series or the Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series.
  • The videos must be less than 720p in resolution and at least 192 pixels width and height.
  • PlayReady or Widevine-based digital rights management technologies shouldn’t be used to safeguard the video.
  • The device must have a constant AC power supply.

According to the company, around 50% of users are currently receiving the new VSR feature for Microsoft Edge on the Canary channel. Once the feature is enabled, users can turn it off or on by tapping the “HD” icon that appears in the address bar.

A new version of Microsoft Edge with a built-in secure network VPN service was released last month. According to reports, the built-in VPN in web browsers offers 15GB of free data along with 1GB of free VPN traffic per month.
