ChatGPT may be used by cybercriminals for hacking and fraud : Report

In the past few weeks, ChatGPT has been gaining attention for its potential use in nefarious activities. Cybersecurity research firm Checkpoint Research reported three incidents in which bad actors used the AI tool to create malicious tools, such as infostealers, encryption tools, and tools to facilitate fraud. These incidents demonstrate how cybercriminals are leveraging the power of AI to carry out their malicious activities.

For creating info stealers

On December 29th, 2022, Checkpoint Research discovered a thread on a popular underground hacking forum titled “ChatGPT – Benefits of Malware”. The publisher of the thread revealed they were conducting experiments with ChatGPT to recreate malware strains and techniques described in existing research papers and write-ups about common malware. These posts were apparently intended to show less tech-savvy cybercriminals how to use ChatGPT for malicious objectives with examples they could put into practice immediately.

For creating multi-layered encryption tools  USDoD, who was dubbed a threat actor, posted a Python script on December 21, 2022, claiming it was the first he ever created. When another cybercriminal commented that the code resembled openAI code, USDoD confirmed that OpenAI had provided assistance in its creation. This could lead to the emergence of cybercriminals with technical capabilities, despite having little to no coding skills, according to Checkpoint Research.

Using ChatGPT for fraud

Checkpoint Research revealed that a cybercriminal had developed scripts for a Dark Web marketplace, which could be used to facilitate the trading of illicit goods like stolen accounts, payment cards, malware, drugs and ammunition, with all payments made in cryptocurrencies.

Sergey Shykevich, Threat Intelligence Group Manager at Check Point, stated that cybercriminals have been drawn to ChatGPT recently, indicating that they have begun to use it to compose malicious code. He went on to explain that ChatGPT has the potential to make it easier for hackers to write code and that, while the tool can be used beneficially, it can also be utilized for malicious objectives.
