A Booster Shot Vs Additional Dose of Covid Vaccine: How The Two Are Different?

A Booster Shot Vs Additional Dose of Covid Vaccine: How The Two Are Different?

Getting 2 doses of the covid-19 vaccine is not enough as we thought it would provide sufficient protection against the virus. The new covid variant, Omicron, has increased the urge to get an additional dose of vaccine. But CDC also recommends a booster dose of covid vaccine for people above 18.

Now, The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization is also reviewing the vaccine policy seeing the present situation and likelihood of third covid wave emergence.  This will include who, when, and how the vaccine will be administered.  Child immunization will also be a key part of the meeting.

This has confused many especially those who have taken both dosages. Are the two same? If not, then what is the difference, and who is eligible for these extra doses.

What Is An Additional Dose And Who Can Take It?

As per CDC, few people may need an additional dose of mRNA covid-19 vaccine due to not enough or weak response toward the first two doses. This includes people with weak immune systems and those with severe health issues ( like cancer patients and those who underwent organ transplants). It will boost the protection level against the virus.

CDC recommends at least a 28 days gap between the second and third dose and suggests them to take the same brand of covid vaccine.

What Is A Covid Vaccine Booster Dose?

Likewise, a Booster shot is also suggested to amplify the protection level and immunity for a longer duration. But it is not specifically advised to immunocompromised people and anyone who has taken both covid vaccine doses is eligible for it but should be aged above 18.

The minimum duration to get the first booster shot is at least 6 months after the completion of the first and second dosage.

A booster shot and additional dose is different not only on the vulnerability level. As per CDC, a booster shot is not brand dependent that means if you take Johnson & Johnson vaccine then you can opt for Pfizer as well. The same does not go for an additional dose. However, the two may have side effects.

More information is needed to make both, additional and booster shots, available for the entire public as they may have side effects.
