Google’s Parent Company Accidentally Destroys Thousands of Jobs in Tech Industry

In a staff memo shared with Reuters, Alphabet’s Chief Executive Officer announced the company would be cutting 12,000 positions. This is the most recent blow to the tech industry, coming shortly after Microsoft proclaimed that 10,000 employees would be laid off. The job losses will affect recruiting, corporate functions, engineering, and products teams.

Google announced layoffs worldwide

Google announced that the layoffs are worldwide and will affect US personnel right away, during a time of economic uneasiness and technological advancement. They, alongside Microsoft, have been investing in the fresh field of generative artificial intelligence.

Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, asserted in a statement that he was sure about the vast opportunity that lies ahead of them due to the strength of their mission, the worth of their products and services, and the early investments in AI.

Reuters was the first outlet to break the news that Microsoft had decided to cut 10,000 jobs and take a $1.2 billion charge to earnings, citing decreased spending by cloud-computing customers and the potential for recession.

 

Google Investing in Artificial Intelligence

This is in addition to the numerous layoffs that have already taken place in the tech sector, which has seen its recent growth slow. Despite this, the company is still investing heavily in generative artificial intelligence, which many in the industry consider to be a growth area.

Nadella noted that customers wanted to make the most of their digital investments while being mindful of the economic downturn in some places and the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. He added that the job cuts, estimated to affect less than 5 percent of Microsoft’s staff, would be completed by the end of March, with notifications beginning on Wednesday.
