Canalys’ report revealed that global smartphone shipments fell 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) in the fourth quarter of 2022 due to tough macroeconomic conditions. Despite this, Apple achieved the highest quarterly market share to date at 25 percent, driven by strong demand for the iPhone 14 series. Samsung followed in second place, with Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo making up the top five. Samsung had the largest share of worldwide smartphone shipments in 2022 overall.

Canalys stated on Tuesday that global smartphone shipments experienced a 17 percent year-over-year decrease during the fourth quarter of last year. Over the entirety of 2022, shipments fell by 11 percent, resulting in a total of less than 1.2 billion due to a challenging macroeconomic climate.

In September, Apple released their iPhone 14 series, making them the main contributor to global smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022. Despite a decrease in demand and manufacturing issues in Zhengzhou, Apple increased their market share to 25% from 20% in the last quarter of 2021.

Canalys’s report reveals that in the fourth quarter of 2021, Samsung was the largest smartphone vendor with a market share of 22%, up from 19% the previous year, while Apple came in second place with 19%.

Chinese vendors were not able to expand their market share, with Xiaomi holding onto the third spot with 11%, a decrease from the 13% they held in Q4 of 2020.

Oppo saw a one percent growth to come in fourth with 10%, while Vivo occupied the fifth position with an 8% market share. Over the course of the entire year, Xiaomi had 13%, Oppo had 9%, and Vivo had 9% market share.

Runar Bjørhovde of Canalys Research stated that although Q4 2022 saw an increase in demand and a decrease in supply issues compared to Q4 2021, the market still witnessed the worst annual and quarterly performance in the last decade.

The holiday sales season helped alleviate inventory levels due to more attractive promotional offers. Canalys anticipates that smartphone vendors will be careful in the coming year, with a priority on profitability, cutting costs, and safeguarding market share.
The research company foresees a flat to minimal growth of the smartphone market in the current year. Le Xuan Chiew of Canalys Research commented that inflationary pressures may ease but the impact of interest rate rises, economic weakness, and a troubled labour market will restrict the market’s potential.
