‘Taarak Mehta…’ producer reacts to BJP’s propaganda: No wrongdoing, just for entertainment

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP highlighted the party’s past contributions to public welfare through a social media post. The post which cleverly used the characters of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ to convey its message and gained attention on various social media platforms. While some appreciated the creative approach, some raised concerns about its potential to influence voters and violate the model code of conduct.

During a conversation, producer of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ Asit Modi expressed his views on this controversy. Asit Modi expressed his awareness of the viral post and defended the collaboration, saying that he did not find any objectionable content in it. According to Modi, the post presented a hypothetical scenario in which the question was, “What if this happens?” And the audience was not openly influenced to vote for any specific party. He stressed that the intention behind the post was light and devoid of political agenda.

This is not the first case of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ being linked to BJP. The show was previously associated with ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and episodes promoting voter awareness were shown in 2019. Given these past collaborations, Modi was asked if he would object if other political parties wanted to use the show’s characters for campaign purposes.
