The Joshimath crisis has caused so much trouble to the locals as their properties are severely damaged due to the incident. The Uttarakhand government has been trying to cover up the cost of loss for the people from the affected region. Finally, the government has managed to get the bill for compensation to victims of the Joshimath crisis sanctioned.

Joshimath Crisis: Relief For the Victims

A cabinet meeting held at Uttarakhand resulted in finalizing the policy regarding the compensation and permanent displacement of land and buildings of the disaster-affected families/persons. The cost of buildings will be provided to the owners after deducing the cost of depreciation of the affected buildings. Moreover, the compensation for commercial buildings like hotels, and dhabas will be done based on the damage suffered by the slab of the structure.

Joshimath Crisis Compensation

The procedure of compensation is divided into parts. The victim can choose from the below-given options in case of damage to the residential building:

  1. The residents can apply for compensation based on the reports of damage made by the technical institutions.
  2. Compensation of a maximum area of up to 75 square meters will be provided for the disaster-affected buildings.
  3. The victim can choose an option where the government will build a residential building relative to the damaged building. The building will be 50 square meters (maximum). Additional 25 square meters will be provided for the cow shed.

Compensation for commercial building owners and shopkeepers:

  1. The victim can demand compensation based on the prescribed rate and the value of land as per the technical institutions.
  2. Under this scheme, the victim will get land sized 15 square meters to reconstruct their shop.
  3.  The victim can go with another option where the government will provide them with a newly constructed shop in an area of 15 square meters.
