After 3 years of independence, Narendra Modi was born in the small town of Vadnagra, in the province of Bombay (now Gujarat), India, on September 17, 1950. His family was a part of a marginalized community and struggled to meet daily needs. Damodaerdas Modi, Narendra Modi’s father, has six children, including himself. Narendra Modi was the third child.

At a very young age, he started selling tea at a local train station to help his father financially. He also wanted to join a Sainik school preparing for military service. But he could not because of the lack of money.

He then joined the Bhartiya Janta Party in 1985. Recognizing his excellent communication skills and leadership, the BJP appointed him as the planning secretary of the Gujarat faction in 1988. Thereafter, he became National Secretary of BJP in 1995 and General Secretary of BJP in 1998.

On October 3, 2001, he was elected Chief Minister of Gujarat and held his position until 2014. In 2014, the BJP made him the face of the party and nominated him as a candidate for the Indian Prime Minister.

He won the Lok Sabha by-election with 3,71,784 votes in the Varanasi Constituency and was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister.

Narendra Modi faced a major controversy in his career during the “Godhra Kand 2002”. On February 27, 2002, 59 Hindu pilgrims were burned alive inside the Sabarmati Express returning from Ayodhya. He was accused of being the mastermind behind the grave massacre.

The event created an outbreak of violence against Muslims in Gujarat. According to reports, the riots ended with 2,500 injuries, 223 disappearances and 1044 deaths. The Gujarat government then appointed a commission of inquiry into the incident. It took 6 years and the commission gave Narendra Modi a clean chit.
