Even before we were born or India got its independence, millions of victims suffered just because they belonged to a particular community. Their pain and sufferings were rarely introduced to the present generation which has created a gap between past and present. Kudos to Filmmakers who have acted as a bridge to fill this gap with movies on communal riots.

Their daring efforts have given a voice to all such victims who have been waiting to be heard. The Kashmir Files is one such movie but it is not the first or only one in this list. There have been several films made on such sensitive topics. However, not every film got a chance to get released and faced ban and criticism. We are listing all such movies here.

1. Hawayein

Ammtoje Mann directed a movie based on 1984 anti-Sikh riots where more than 10 thousand Sikhs were killed. This mass killing was the response of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination by a Sikh bodyguard. The movie tried to show the hard reality and ground situations of Sikhs.

2. Bombay

Demolition of the Babri masjid burnt Hindu-Muslim relationship and its effect was largely seen in Mumbai. The entire city and its people suffered for 5 days continuously. Director Mani Ratnam dared to tell the horrors of Mumbai riots through Bombay movie.

It was the highest grossing films then and was even featured at the Philadelphia Film Festival. The movie was released in 4 different languages.

3. Parzania

2002 Gujrat riots where a muslim neighborhood became a victim of communal riot got featured in Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika’s Parzania. The movie was directed by Rahul Dholakia who did his directional debut with this movie.

Parzania fetched 2 National Film Awards to the movie and its cast and was also nomicated as Best Story at 2008 Filmfare.

4. Shorgul

In 2013, Muzzaffarnagar became a victim of clash between Hindus and Muslims that took life of many people and left thousands displaced. Around 10 thousand people were detained and 1000 were booked as an action against the accused.

This Hindi political thriller was awarded at several film festivals in Pakistan, Singapore, Thessaloniki, and more. It is based on not only but thousand of true stories of 2002 when Godhrakand took place in Gujarat.
