Suhas Subramaniam Becomes First Indian-American Representative from Virginia

In the midst of US Election 2024, an Indian-origin candidate Suhas Subramaniam has won the election for the first time to the lower house of the US Parliament – the House of Representatives. With this, he has become the first Indian-American to win the election from Virginia and East Coast state.

38-year-oldSuhas Subramaniam was nominated by the Democratic Party for the seat from Virginia and East Coast. He was pitted against Mike Clancy of the Republican Party. After his victory, Suhas said,

“I thank the people of the 10th district of Virginia for showing their faith in me. This is a proud moment. This district is our home. I got married here. My wife Miranda and I are raising our daughters here. The issues that the community is facing here are also the issues of my family. It will be a matter of pride to represent my district in Washington.”

Suhas, who stood from the 10th parliamentary district of Virginia in the House of Representatives, is currently a senator in the House of the same state. He currently lives in a district of Virginia where the population of Indian-Americans has a lot of influence. Subramanian, who has previously been an advisor to Barack Obama in the White House, believes in Hinduism and is popular among Indian-Americans across the country.

With this victory, Suhas Subramaniam has become a part of the Samosa Caucus of Indian origin, which includes five Indian-Americans. These include Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamurthy, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal and Shri Thanedar.

Where Mr. Thanedar was elected to the House of Representatives for the second consecutive time. Thanedar (69) has been an MP in Michigan’s 13th parliamentary district since 2023. On the other hand, Raja Krishnamurthy, who has been an MP from the seventh parliamentary district in the state of Illinois since 2017, also won.
