Every year Indians also wait for the Oscars with a hope that at least this time we would get this prestigious honor. Oscars 2022 was no different than past few years Academy Awards where we manage to reach the final list and come back disappointed. But, you might not know there are a few Indians who have won Oscar.

And the first to join the list was a female.

1. Bhanu Athaiya

Though Bhanu Athaiya was the fifth Indian to be nominated, she made history by becoming the first Indian who won Oscar. She was a costume designer and received an award in the same field for outfits she designed for ‘Gandhi’ movie. Bhanu was one of the renowned personalities of her time. She had worked with Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Guru Dutt and many more.

Besides Bollywood personalities, Bhanu also worked with famous directors such as Richard Attenborough and Conrad Rooks. She died on 15th October 2020 at the age of 91.

2. Satyajit Ray

Ray was one of the masters of the world of cinema. His approach to any story and ability to bring out life from it had made him a revolutionary filmmaker. Even today, filmmakers take inspiration from Satyajit Ray and use his movies as case studies.

He got several prestigious awards for his vast contribution to cinema, one of which was an Honorary Oscar award that he got in 1992.

3. Sampooran Singh Kalra

Famously known as Gulzar, Sampooran Singh was awarded the award for Jai Ho lyrics in the category Best Original Song. He was nominated only once in the Academy Award.

4. A.R.Rahmanindians who won oscar

Legendary music composer A.R.Rahman is the only Indian to win 2 Oscars. His masterpiece Jai Ho brought him this honor. Rahman was nominated for 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire in the Best Original Song, and Best Original Score.

5. Resul Pookutty

Resul is one of those Indians who made us proud by winning an individual Oscar. He won the trophy for amazing sound work for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. The movie was directed by Dyan Boyle and bagged 8 academy awards in 2009.

These winners have filled us with pride at the global platform but there are others more who proved that we can compete at Oscars. A few of them are Ashvin Kumar, who is youngest filmmaker from India to be nominated at Oscar twice and film producer Ismail Merchant, who was nominated thrice (highest nomination for any individual).
