The novel is a murder mystery set at the New York West Point at the US military academy. Edgar Allen Poe set off with detective Landor to solve the murder mystery.

But in reality, Edgar Allen Poe actually attended the US military academy. And writer Louis Bayard linked Poe’s youth period in the US Military Academy to his novel.
