Meta acquires 3D smart lens maker Luxexcel

Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has purchased Luxexcel, a Dutch company that produces 3D smart glass, as it continues to focus on its goal of creating a metaverse in 2023.

According to The Verge, Luxexcel has the capability to incorporate the components required for creating an augmented reality (AR) experience within prescription eyeglass lenses, including holographic film and projectors. Meta has not disclosed the amount it paid for the acquisition of Luxexcel.

In a statement, Meta expressed its excitement about the acquisition of Luxexcel and the deepening of the partnership between the two companies. Luxexcel’s 3D-printed prescription lenses can be utilised in AR glasses.

In 2021, Luxexcel entered into a partnership with WaveOptics, a company that supplies displays for Snap’s Spectacles. At the same time, Meta announced plans to close down its video-calling smart display ‘Portal’ and two of its unreleased smartwatch projects, as part of a restructuring process that involved laying off 11,000 employees.

During a company earnings call, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company’s new high-end virtual reality headset would provide high-resolution mixed reality experiences, allowing users to seamlessly blend virtual objects into their physical surroundings.

Zuckerberg said, “Our goal for the Quest Pro line over the next several years is to enable an increasing number of people to complete their work in virtual and mixed reality, in a way that is even better than using PCs.

However, according to reports, Meta has had difficulty in attracting and retaining users on its social virtual reality (VR) platform called Horizon Worlds, which is considered a key component in the company’s $10 billion metaverse ambition.
