ISRO missions 2023: Space start-up industry likely to boom next year, Details Here

By 2023, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will focus on scientific exploration with specific missions to the Sun and Moon (Aditya and Chandrayaan-3 respectively), while the budding startup sector is anticipated to thrive in the space applications field.

In 2022, NSIL awarded a ₹860-crore contract to the space conglomerate composed of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the commercial development of five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs), which was a major accomplishment in the space industry.

In April and November of 2020, Indian start-ups made a statement with Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-S rocket being the first suborbital launch by a commercial enterprise and Pixxel’s Shakuntala and Anand hyperspectral satellites taking flight on SpaceX’s Falcon-9 and ISRO’s PSLV, respectively.

India’s Gaganyaan project, a human space flight, is set to carry out experiments in 2023. The first unmanned mission is slated for the last quarter of the year, which will assess the performance of the project’s human-rated launch vehicle, orbital module propulsion system, and re-entry processes.

Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office, informed Parliament in December that the first flight test of the reusable launch vehicle (RLV-LEX) will take place early in 2023 at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga, Karnataka.

Skyroot Aerospace, who launched India’s first privately built rocket in November, will be sending a customer satellite into orbit in 2019. Additionally, Agnikul Cosmos, an IIT-Madras campus start-up, has planned a trial flight for its custom-made Agnibaan rocket.

Awais Ahmed, co-founder and CEO of Pixxel, has predicted that the beginning of multiple rocket companies launching around the globe will result in a competitive situation similar to “Game of Thrones”, as they all vie for the same customers sending satellites into orbit.

Ahmed informed PTI that six commercial hyperspectral imagery satellites are being created and will be ready for launch in the coming year.

DhruvaSpace has recently secured a ₹20-crore contract to manufacture satellites as part of their demonstration of the viability of amateur satellite communication to improve ham radio operations. The Thybolt 1 and Thybolt 2 satellites were launched by ISRO’s PSLV C-54 mission.
