Today is the saddest day in football history as the world lost its most likable football player Pele. At the age of 82, he was laid to rest at Memorial Necropole Ecumenic cemetery in Santos, Brazil.
He was known to us by so many names Black Pearl, the Greatest footballer of all time, and Footballer of the century.
Today he died but we will remember that football legend player forever.
Life Journey of Legendary Footballer Pele
A Brazilian forward was among the most successful player of the 20th century.
Pele was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento on 23rd October 1940. He was the son of footballer Dondinho and Celeste Arantes.
Story of Pele’s Name
He got his name Pele during his school days because he mispronounce his favourite local goalkeeper name ‘Bile’.
Pele’s Career in Football
Pele began his professional football career in 1956 at the age of 15. He joined the professional football club Santos FC.
After 10 months he was called by the Brazil National Team.
And he first debuted in the world cup in 1958 and scored 6 goals and again won in the 1962 and 1970 world Cups.
He was reached by many famous clubs but didn’t join any and remained in Santos for his whole life till his retirement in 1974.
But the only club he joined outside Santos was New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League for the 1975 season.
Pele Playing Style
Pele is an exceptional and intelligent player. The forward and the midfielder. He was hard-working and intelligent.
His excellent speed and dribbling skills enabled him to beat opponents.
He could snatch the ball very easily from his opponents and turned it into goal.
Philanthropic Work
Pele was apponited as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994.
He also supported various charitable causes including Action for Brazil’s Children, SOS Children’s Villages, The Littlest Lamb, Prince’s Rainforest Project, and others.
In 2016 he auctioned more than 1600 items accumulated over decades and raised 3.6 million pounds for charity.
In 2018 Pele founded his charitable organization, Pele foundation to help poor children across the globe.
Awards and Accolades
Pele received Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
Olympic order by International Committee in 2016
In 2000 Pele was voted the World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
He was also the FIFA Player of the Century.
In 2014 he was awarded FIFA Ballon d’Or Prix d’Honneur for the first time.
