Recently, the Bengaluru-based startup, Latlong, unveiled a geo-coding API. It claimed in a blog post that it is significantly more accurate than Google Maps API; it's 2x more accurate, according to a benchmark study conducted by the National Geodesy Centre of IIT Kanpur.

The study further indicated that the accuracy of Latlong's API is also 35x better than that of Microsoft Bing API and about 200x greater than that of TomTom API.

Latlong is leveraging the AI4Bharat API to achieve this. The goal of IIT Madras' AI4Bharat effort is to provide open-source datasets and AI models for Indic languages.
MapMyIndia is another Indian startup that competes with Google in this market. In addition to other services, the company offers a full API stack, IOT devices, and a map app. MapmyIndia targets 4 major vertical markets: direct users, the automobile industry, mobile internet, and companies and the government.
