International Employee Day was initially established by Dr. Bob Nelson – a founding member of Recognition of Professionals International in 1998. 

The Recognition of International Professionals was established to recognize & appreciate the employee. It was later changed to the name National Organisation of Employee Recognition in 2007.  The original founding sponsors are Sear, Banner and OC Tanner company.

Originally Dr. Bob Nelson celebrated the publication of his book 1001 Way to reward the public work of employees to boos their spirit & motivation to do good work.  He wanted Employee day to become a public holiday and appear in the workplace calendar but later it was not declared as a holiday and celebrated inside the organisation to appreciate the workforce.
