Gordon Moore: The Man with Golden Heart

The world knows that Gordon Moore was an excellent engineer and had a significant role in the creation of Intel Corporation. However, very few know that he was one of the greatest philanthropists as well.

Here are a few heart-warming social activities initiated by Gordon Moore that make him one of the greatest philanthropists of all time:

  • Gordon Moore and his wife opened a foundation named “Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation” back in the year 2000. The worth of this property stands at $5 billion. Now, putting it to comparison scale with Gordon Moore’s net worth i.e. $7 billion which is barely more than the worth of the foundation.

  • Moore donated $600 million to Caltech, Research University in 2001. He served as a member of Caltech’s board of trustees since 1983. He donated such a significant amount four decades ago making it quite a remarkable tag of philanthropy. He donated the amount to Caltech to keep them at forefront of research and technology.
  • Moore again donated $200 million to Caltech in 2007, this time he wanted to inspire the progress of Caltech as they were working on the world’s second-largest optical telescope in the world.
  • In the 1990s, Moore gifted $166 million to the University of California, Berkeley. He wanted the University to expand from material science and physics to genomics and data science.
  • Gordon Moore’s wife invested in the welfare of nursing care as their foundation pledged $100 million over 11 years to establish a nursing school at the University of California, Davis.
  • Moore has also been a long-time sponsor of Northern California universities including:
    • Stanford University (over $190 million until 2022)
